Is the retail giant REWE Group building Germany’s first food-superapp? 🛒📲 Rewe has always been a pioneer in digital offers and now expands its portfolio with investments and partnerships. Last month alone, 2 deals hit the news: 1️⃣ Rewe participated in Flink's new funding round of 150$mn valued at ~900$mn (down about 70% since its peak valuation). With this cash injection, Flink plans to break even in Q2 2025, apparently having reached operational profitability in selected markets already today. Also they plan to open 30 additional warehouses. 2️⃣ Lieferando and Rewe announced a partnership, providing access to 3000 SKUs of Rewe’s assortment via Lieferando’s app, delivered by Lieferando’s courier network. “Rewe Express” promises delivery times of 45 minutes, closing the gap between Rewe’s scheduled delivery and Flink’s ultrafast delivery. With the new offers, Rewe now ticks many boxes that I expect from a food-superapp, combining all things food, and beyond: ✅ Brick and mortar stores ✅ Click and collect ✅ Scheduled delivery ✅ Quick-commerce (via Flink and Lieferando) ✅ Offer promotions in app  ✅ Digital travel agency  ❌ The only piece missing is food delivery. Did you know that the Russian chains X5 and Magnit are also at the frontier of supermarket tech? ➡️ Magnit has integrated AI to monitor inventory at shelf level, ensuring products (including 5000 pharmacy SKUs) are always available for their 30 minute delivery & click and collect. ➡️ Meanwhile, X5 Group deploys smart shopping carts, automatically scanning products for a frictionless checkout. These are the new figures for German e-commerce - HDE Online Monitor 2024 📊 54 percent of German e-commerce sales were generated via online marketplaces in 2023 - according to the HDE in the new edition of its Online Monitor 2024. My great Co-Founder Ingrid Lommer already posted the detailed figures to this: https://lnkd.in/daTR5H-j The data from the Online Monitor is always a perfect basis to look at the marketplacebusiness in Germany.  It simply shows at a glance how incredibly dominant Amazon is in German e-commerce - and how difficult it is to do without online marketplaces in the sales mix. But let's start from the beginning: according to the study presented a few weeks ago by Handelsverband Deutschland e.V. (HDE) and IFH COLOGNE, German e-commerce turnover in 2023 was 85.4 billion euros, around 1 percent more than in the previous year. Disclaimer: This figure differs significantly from the Bundesverband E-Commerce und Versandhandel Deutschland e.V. (bevh)'s calculation, which predicted a 1.8 per cent decline in sales for German e-commerce in 2023. The reasons for the differences are complicated and lie in the methodology... To put it simply, the bevh surveys German online consumers once a week about their online spending, while the HDE surveys German companies once a year about their online revenue (B2C). If consumers don't admit that they shopped at Temu again last week and companies attribute their cross-border sales to the German company, discrepancies arise between the two perspectives. There are many more reasons. If you want a deep dive on this, let us know. A whopping 60 percent of these 85.4 billion euros are turned over on Amazon.de! 17 percent is accounted for by Amazon's own business (own brands + vendors), 43 percent via the Marketplace (sellers). And 11 percent of e-commerce sales - or 9.3 billion euros - are generated by other marketplaces such as eBay, OTTO, Kaufland Global Marketplace, Zalando, Douglas, MediaMarktSaturn... according to HDE. This means that the marketplace business model's share of sales in German e-commerce has once again risen slightly - but it was almost exclusively Amazon that was able to secure the additional market share. Nevertheless, the other marketplaces also increased their sales - or to put it another way: Online growth in Germany in 2023 took place on Amazon and a few other marketplaces. Nowhere else. 🤩 I am happy to share another brilliant and inspirational piece of work of our dear client, Philine Prof. Freifrau von Sell, and for (also our client at OVERW8) KATHARINA HOVMAN, her sister and Hamburg-based cosmopolitan fashion brand. For each season, she creates the in the meanwhile famous "lookbooks" - a storytelling 3D way of representing the new collection and colour palette of the season. I look forward to discovering these little treasures each time. 💡🛠 Our job at o8, by the way, was to help turn the idea into a feasible tech solution for Shopify. Philine shared her idea of how she would actually envision representing the new collections online. At first, it looked like it couldn't be done... but nothing we would stop short of! 🤠 We held a 'powwow' about how we could enable this in Shopify's overall great but creative-wise pretty restricted real, then built her like a custom app so she could turn her vision into a 360° experience with audio, video, and well-structured copy. Since joining Zalando, a number of people have asked me what has become of FamilyPunk, the start-up I co-founded 4 years ago. The short answer is that I am closing it down. Today is the last day our online shop for audio courses and print products will be live (shop.familypunk.com). There are days when I feel sad about this, frustrated and disappointed in myself. Other days, I feel relief, a new sense of freedom, gratitude for having had the opportunity and pride for the courage to try. Looking back across the last years, there are a few things I learned about myself: 📝 I really love writing - Biggest surprise and so gratifying to discover a superpower I never knew I had. 💰 Having impact is great, getting paid for having impact is better - Not paying yourself a salary is often part of bootstrapping. I have come to realize that impact alone is not enough for me. 👩🏻‍🏫 I can learn a lot, but not everything - Learning is part of every founder journey. Yet, I never cracked online marketing and did not have the funds to hire in. Being in B2C, that proved lethal. 🤸🏻‍♀️180° pivots don’t come natural to me - We started out 2 weeks before the first lockdown in 2020. And despite the complete change in context, we did not even consider a pivot. I have not become a flip-flop, but I now pay more attention to reading the signs of the times. 💔 Instagram and me ain’t no love story - Of course, we jumped onto Instagram to generate "free" traction. I found it all work and little fun, and it never grew on me. At the moment, I love my life without it. As I am putting my founder days on hold, a big “Thank You” goes out to all the people who made this journey worthwhile. Is this the future of delivery? I just discovered that MediaMarktSaturn, Germany’s largest electronics retailer with over 1000 stores in ten countries in Europe, now offers instant delivery via Uber. Personally, I find it super practical, especially when I urgently need something—like an adapter that just broke - but I'm too tied up in calls to go and grab a replacement. MediaMarkt promises delivery within 90 minutes, and what really surprised me was the cost: just €4.99. That's almost the same as standard shipping, which usually takes 2-3 days. Fractional CFOs are not only a startup thing I recently came across the interview between Snocks founder Johannes Kliesch and Philip Hitschler-Becker, CEO of the confectionery manufacturer Hitschler, a fourth generation family owned business. When Philip took over the business, he was facing a challenging situation and needed to quickly start restructuring. In the interview, he describes how he identified product lines that were not contributing to company profits and cut them down, eventually seeing his efforts turning into financial success. Now how does this obvious thing require a fractional CFO you might ask? Many family owned businesses, so classic „German Mittelstand“, have been constantly performing well since incorporation. Profits were surging, growth inevitable - things were going well. Many of these company grew to sizes of 100+ employees and, given the success, finance was not about analyzing what happened and planning what might work better but more or less just bookkeeping to fulfill the statutory duties, calculate taxes and determine how much cash can be paid out as dividends. Now as we all know, the recent years have been a lot different from what we‘ve been used to. Profits are plumetting and dynamics of business are changing rapidly. The traditional setups of these companies often aren‘t capable of compiling numbers in the required granularity and the team oftentimes does not bring the right expertise as they were always tasked to keep operations running but never asked to perform financial analysis. Typically, such companies do not require a full time CFO since this is a) a pricey resource and b)by adjusting systems and processes, hired finance executives would partially eradicate the flaws they were hired for quickly, making themaelves redundant. And this is where fractional CFOs come into play. We join companies on a part time basis and start fixing outdated processes right away. We are well trained to make sure the numbers needed to take strategic decisions are created as close to „on the fly“ as possible. And we advise on how to tackle profitability issues, navigate through the change process and support in redefining corporate strategy.
